”Kulturens egenverdi”. Eller var det ”kunstens egenverdi” – og er det nå noen forskjell eller er det nettopp det. Uansett, begge deler er ofte henvist til sisteplass over listen over hva kultur skal eller bør gjøre for mennesker og samfunn.
For kulturens nytteverdi er det som overbeviser i vår realfagsfokuserte offentlighet. Og jeg skal ærlig innrømme at jeg har da sannelig brukt nok av min tid til å fortelle om hvilken ”nytte” kunsten har. I siste runde i en diskusjon mot noen gjenstridige realister så kan man slå i bordet med at de kreative næringene sysselsetter 2,5 gang flere enn i bilbransjen og fem ganger flere enn telekommunikasjonssektoren totalt i hele Europa.
Det er bare bygg og anlegg og serveringsbransjen som sysselsetter flere. 7 millioner europeere jobber i kulturell og kreativ sektor. Og gjennom hele finanskrisen økte sysselsettingen i sektoren med 0,7%, mens det totale sysselsettingsnivået gikk tilsvarende ned*. Så det så, liksom. Kultur gir arbeidsplasser!
Kultur og næring. Kultur og helse. Kultur og identitet. Kultur og trivsel.
Men hva med kultur? Bare kultur? Kultur punktum. Kultur.
Har kulturen egenverdi på linje med et menneske?
Du kan ikke ha ”litt” egenverdi som menneske. Enten så mener vi at alle mennesker har en egenverdi eller så mener vi det ikke. Det finnes ikke noen skala.
Slik er det også med kunstens egenverdi. Enten så mener vi at kunsten har en egenverdi eller så mener vi at det har den ikke. Det er vel ingen tvil om denne kronikørens holdning i dette spørsmålet.
Jeg mistenker det er mange som ikke skiller mellom kunstneriske uttrykk som man liker og ikke liker, og blander dette inn i hvorvidt det har egenverdi eller ei. For meg har en balalaikaspillende bestemor samme kunstneriske egenverdi som en rappende felespiller og et grunge-band aldri noen knapt har hørt om.
Det er ulike kulturelle uttrykk og det har i seg selv en iboende verdi at de finnes.
Jeg mistenker også mange for å blande vurdering av eventuell egenverdi inn i skillet mellom kunstneriske uttrykk man forstår og de man ikke forstår. Jeg tror jeg ikke sparker inn lukkede dører ved å hevde at det ikke nødvendigvis er en god slutning. For en uke siden så jeg forestillingen ”Det er bedre å kappe det av enn å gå gjennom livet” på Trøndelag Teater. Jeg skjønte ikke det spøtt, men det var likevel denne vårens absolutte kunstneriske høydepunkt.
Forståelse. Trangen til forståelse. Trangen til å sette kunsten inn i en logisk og forståelig sammenheng. Det står bare i veien for å oppdage kunstens egentlige verdi. Det at den eksisterer er det vakreste og mest naturlige av alt.
Jeg liker definitivt ikke alle kunstneriske ytringer. Det finnes usedvanlig mange dårlige kunstneriske uttrykk, på samme måte som det finnes usedvanlig mye dårlig journalistikk. Men for meg så er begge deler en måte å gi grunnlaget for det eksepsjonelle.
Det eksepsjonelle står på kjempers skuldre. Og de kjempene heter “Elendig”, “Middelmådig” og “Overflødig”. Jeg tror vi kan snakke om et forhold mer skjevfordelt enn det som er synlig og usynlig på et isjell. Men nettopp det overflødige, elendige og middelmådige – det må til for å kunne frembringe kunst (og journalistikk for den saks skyld) av høy kvalitet. Men alt har egenverdi. Og mangfoldet er vesentlig. Mangfoldet av ytringer i det offentlige rom.
I grunnlovens paragraf 100 står det at staten skal ” legge forholdene til rette for en åpen og opplyst offentlig samtale”. Derfor har man pressestøtte. Derfor putter stat og kommune inn millioner av kroner til offentlige museer, biblioteker, teatre, orkestre og gallerier. Legger til rette for bæremeiser, spaserstokker og skolesekker. Setter opp bandgarasjer og organiserer råd for kunstnerisk utsmykning.
Jeg registrerer en offentlig samtale rundt Haugesund kommunes satsning på kultur. Og her havner fort kultur, i et tøft økonomisk klima, under “kjekt-å-ha”. Jeg vil hevde det motsatte. Det er et må-ha i de tøffe tidene. Når landet eller byen flyter over av melk og honning, da er det også mange nok til å betale.
Med fare for å være navlebeskuende og ikke oppdatert på alt som skjer bortenfor Karmsundgata. Hvor er det frie profesjonelle kunstmiljøet på Karmøy? Karmøy har da flere innbyggere enn Haugesund. Finnes det noen frie kunstneriske produksjonsmiljøer i Tysvær?
Jeg merker ikke en trengsel i kontordøra fra profesjonelle utenfor Haugesund som ønsker å samarbeide. Jeg sitter med en følelse av at Haugesunds nabokommuner har en jobb å gjøre! Hele regionen bør legge til rette for ikke bare det deltagende og frivillige kulturliv. Men også stimulere til flere frie profesjonelle kunstneriske stemmer. For denne regionen trenger all den estetiske og kulturelle kapital den kan frembringe (oops, der havnet jeg nesten i “nytte”-argumentasjonen igjen).
Et deilig utslag av det frie kunstneriske uttrykket er Bjørn Olaf Gudmestad Haugsnes og Andreas Mikkelsen Velde Solem i Veggdekor, Design&Grafitti som har laget kunst på to ellers svært kjedelige parkeringsplass-vegger rett ved Tinghuset i Haugesund. Lik det eller ikke. Men det er et kraftfullt kunstnerisk uttrykk for kreativ skaperkraft. Og vi trenger det.
I Tromsø gjør politimann og lokallagsleder i Politiets Fellesforbund, Karl Karlson, furore fordi han mener mye kunst er som keiserens nye klær og dermed har stilt ut kunst han har brukt alt fra fire minutter til ett kvarter å lage.
Utstillingen “De aller fleste er enig med meg” åpnet nå i helgen, men har fått bl.a. kunstkritiker Tommy Olsson i Klassekampen til å ta frem superlativene**. Det er fremprovosert og en protestaksjon. Men bildet av Norges Lover skutt igjennom av en tjenestepistol gir mange assosiasjoner. Og har en egenverdi.
Og synes du ikke at kulturelle uttrykk har en egenverdi, så mener jeg du mister et vesentlig aspekt av livet. Jeg har respekt for din egenverdi og din rett til å ytre deg om det. Det kan til og med, som i tilfellet i Tromsø, bli god kunst av det.
Først og fremst har alle kulturelle uttrykk en egenverdi, dernest har det en rekke heldige bieffekter.
